Purple Heart/Ribbon?

From: Gwen and Don Jackson (foxsecurity@earthlink.net) | Date: 2005-02-16 08:35:51 UTC-08:00
I realize that I'm getting into this thread a little late, but figured that I would throw in my two cents. I too had a problem with the Purple Heart award, and even though I could have requested the award, I decided to pass.
The Purple Heart has an obvious special meaning and any use by us could be degrading for those that were awarded the medal. Purple, pink, or other colored ribbons and other possible "titled" stamps may too have other connotations that may be offensive?
Since the award that is in question, is for injuries occurring while letterboxing, why not just call it the "First Aid Box". Carve something similar to a Red Cross, and let it be simply an award that one receives when First aid was needed.

Thank you - I'm a newbie, but I was having the same consternations and wasn't sure how to express them.
You said it well,
:-)

I like "First Aid Box." It expresses the spirit of the letterbox and
has the "box" part in it, so you know it's a letterbox!

Remember way back when talk of a "Purple Heart Letterbox" created a huge stir on
this list? As I recall, it was the cause of one of our periodic flameouts and I, for one,
was VERY surprised when this current box showed up in circulation. Then, I was even
more surprised when no one made a single remark about it... Thanks, Don, for
pointing out the possibly offensive nature of this letterbox, making light of
something of great significance to those who have received the real thing. Funhog

Sorry, Guys for stirring up an old debate. As my husband is in the military
and thankfully has not gone anywhere to have to earn this honor. I am
absolutely in favor of a first aid box. I was feeling very weird about the
title of this box. Thanks for pointing out the offensiveness of a so called
box. So can I receive the "first aid box when it is ready?
